"Beneath the Surface" Framed Prints, Oak

At first glance, Beneath the Surface appears to be a traditional dental bite-wing X-ray, the familiar clinical image of a patient’s teeth and jawbones captured in stark black and white. The edges are defined, the shadows of teeth and gums casting familiar shapes in the dark voids of the X-ray, creating a sense of crisp precision.

However, as you zoom in and study the piece more closely, the true magic of the artwork begins to reveal itself. The shadowy, dark areas of the X-ray are not just the interior of the mouth, but an intricately layered and stunningly detailed landscape. Hidden beneath the surface of the image, the darkness transforms into a lush, serene water scene—an idyllic landscape full of life and mystery.

In the lower portion of the X-ray, a tranquil waterfall cascades down a jagged cliff, its waters tumbling over the edge. In this scene, the crown on the molar is transformed into a large, vibrant water lily, its delicate petals contrasting against the rough texture of the waterfall’s edge. The surrounding water is calm, with soft ripples moving upon the waters’ surface, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Rising majestically from the horizon is a pirate ship with a blood-red flag, its towering sails unfurled in the wind. The ship is anchored near the base of the waterfall, as if poised for adventure or mystery. To the right of the ship, perched atop a hill, stands a kingdom’s castle—a medieval structure with high stone walls and watchtowers. Plumes of smoke curl upward from the castle, hinting at a fire or a distant battle, which adds an element of drama and tension to the otherwise serene scene.

The background sky is dotted with dark clouds, where hints of stormy weather loom, and a faint, ethereal glow from the setting sun peeks through the horizon. The entire scene is framed within the boundaries of the X-ray, the familiar geometric form of the dental image now serving as a window to a fantastical world.

This merging of the clinical with the fantastical is what makes Beneath the Surface so compelling. The stark, scientific nature of the X-ray is juxtaposed against the rich, vibrant fantasy landscape, transforming a diagnostic image into an imaginative escape. It is a piece that plays with perception, inviting the viewer to look beyond the obvious, to see the beauty and the story hidden beneath the surface of everyday life. The use of the crown as a water lily cleverly links the two worlds together—nature, adventure, and beauty growing out of the structure of something as ordinary and clinical as a tooth.
